Roger Federer told how he called Rafael Nadal to announce his retirement. The Swiss said goodbye to tennis with a doubles match with Nadal at the Laver Cup.


It`s a very unusual situation for us to be on the same team. It changed the whole process of my parting. I was hoping I could pair up with Rafa so I called him after the US Open. It was a very emotional conversation, he was one of the first, besides my team and family, to whom I told about my decision to retire.


I had to call him and say: Rafa, before you make other plans, I would really like you to play in the Laver Cup and play maybe the last match from soccer tips partners in pair with me. That would be amazing. Unfortunately, my knees are in trouble, and I think this is the end. And he`s like: Okay, my God, yes, I`ll come, no matter what it costs me.


Now he has become a father, I`m happy for him. We were not sure that he would come because of the child (Nadal`s wife was in her last month of pregnancy -). It was one of the first times I had to tell this story and come to terms with the fact that my career was coming to an end.


So when he arrived and Novak and Murray and Borg were there, it was incredible. I knew it would be an emotional moment.


It was wonderful to say goodbye in London, where I achieved a lot. So the Laver Cup was amazing, Rafa was there, took my hand for a while, or I did it - it doesn`t matter (laughs). It was great, " Federer said on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.
