Ecclestone was surprised by Hamilton`s decision to join Ferrari.


The former head of Formula 1 noted that this whole story seemed very strange to him, especially considering that Hamilton announced his future departure to Ferrari before the start of the championship:


It was a very, very strange move. After all, Toto Wolff only became more reliant on Lewis, they became closer for selfish, personal reasons. And I don`t think there has ever been a relationship in Formula 1 in which both parties could rely so completely on each other. Obviously, such a relationship never actually existed - which is why Hamilton decided to suddenly leave.


Yes, this news came as a very big surprise to me. And I didn`t understand why he did exactly that, reporting everything almost a year before the transition itself? Why didn`t he wait to make the announcement at least until the middle of the championship? I think Hamilton was a little selfish to get involved in all this.


As for Ferrari, Fred Wasser has known Lewis from an early age. And it also seems to me that the actions of Ferrari President John Elkann were also dictated to a certain extent by his ego - after all, he managed to get one of the leading Formula 1 drivers, the best F1 driver in history in the opinion of many people. Yes, such things happen - sometimes circumstances just turn out this way and not otherwise.


Ecclestone said that in a similar situation he would not have signed Hamilton, being the head of Brabham in the 70-80s of the last century:


Too much attention and too many opinions. At Mercedes, Lewis is sometimes used to being in charge. Toto allows him to do this to keep Lewis happy and stay on the team.


I have never had such relationships with racers. They just remained my friends, and still are, not because of money or anything else. Just friends.


And such relationships are much closer to me than those where they tell you to jump - and you jump. If I want to do something, I will do it because I will think that I am doing the right thing.
