Villeneuve explained why he criticized Ricciardo. 1997 Formula 1 champion Jacques Villeneuve commented on his statements addressed to the ex-pilot of the Republic of Belarus Daniel Ricciardo.
At the Canadian Grand Prix, Villeneuve questioned why Ricciardo was still in F1, prompting a strong reaction from the Australian. Daniel later left the team during the season.
It never even occurred to me that I wanted to prove something. The words caused a lot of reaction - mostly negative, but also positive. Many people began to openly discuss this topic. The question is not to destroy someone, but we must acknowledge reality.
Perhaps many people understood: Okay, Jacques is right about something, let`s discuss the issue in more detail, which is what happened. And in this sense I am pleased. My feelings would be no different if Daniel Ricciardo had stayed at Red Bull. I`m not saying: Oh, I`m glad he left F1. I`m just glad I brought reality to the forefront.
Daniel still has a great image and a great career, it hasn`t hurt him at all. It was just a conversation about something important being a little overlooked by the racing industry. I said what everyone was thinking. It`s not that his departure from F1 justified or did not justify my position.
When you work as an expert, you try to talk about current topics. This doesn`t mean you`re right - it`s hard to remain neutral no matter how hard you try. We all have feelings. You want to give the audience enough food for thought, to start a discussion. In this regard, I am satisfied, " said Jacques.
